about

Ketamines did a big, stupid tour in June 2013, the band was me, Andrew Payne, Alex "Sex Dwarf" Hamlyn, Jesse Locke and Sarah Ford (who smartly bailed on the band right before tour). That tour was a killer, and by September Andrew, Sarah and Alex were out of the band (replaced by Joel French from Sam Coffey and Carmen Leah). Truthfully, I was in a really bad place that year (that was peak "Slagging Off" / "Paul Lawton, most hated man in Canada" era), and was alienating to everyone around me. That tour was fateful, because Andrew, Alex and Jesse and I also did a few sets as Zebrassieres, Andrew's band from Ottawa that I truly admired.

I got wind Andrew was starting a new band and decided to bail on Ketamines and start focusing on a band where I was in way less control. Century Palm started out as the new Andrew band, and I kinda talked my way into it. The original lineup was... me, Andrew, Alex, Jesse and Sarah.

Fall of 2013, we wrote and recorded the original Century Palm set (To the Ether, White Light, Cold Reflection and New Creation) and I was ramping down Ketamines. By spring of 2014, I approached Andrew with an idea - maybe I could contribute songs, and I would close down Ketamines and Century Palm could be the Zebrassieres/Ketamines combo (in my head) I believed it was. Andrew, being the good human he is, agreed and that set the course for the next three years.

The thing was, writing in my style, being so different from Andrews was REALLY difficult for me, and I think the three years that I lobbed songs at Century Palm, I never felt as insecure about my songwriting abilities. The only "Paul songs" that ended up being released under the Century Palm banner were: "Accept" (B-Side to the Valley Cyan 7" on Deranged), Mean Tikes holdover "Reasons" (on the first Pentagon Black paper compilation #1), "King of John St." and "Sick of It" (on the Meet You LP) and "Dead Soon" (a Meet You reject that ended up on the second Pentagon Black paper compilation).

Here are those 4 songs, plus some others that just never worked in the Century Palm context. I'm very fond of "Rise" which steals a Propaghandi lyric, "One Day" which is completely about feeling ready to give up on music because of how quickly people forget about you, "Release" which I wrote about a Zizek book and borrows lyrics from the Mean Tikes song "Emergency" and "Meaning in 1990" which is basically a kill-yer-idols thing. All of these are me on my own playing all the stuff!

I've been playing in bands since 1995 and I've never felt like I was very good at it. Working with Andrew Payne in Century Palm was a singular experience for me because he is very good at writing songs and I am so grateful for the lessons on making music he taught me.
